No Man is an Island

No man is an island,

Entire of itself,

Every man is a piece of the continent,

A part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,

Europe is the less.

As well as if a promontory were.

As well as if a manor of thy friend's

Or of thine own were:

Any man's death diminishes me,

Because I am involved in mankind,

And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.

-John Donne

One of my favorite phrases, one that I often find myself repeating almost everyday and that I have come to really understand in the last years of my life is ¨No man is an island¨. This phrase comes from a poem (above) by John Donne and it really just expresses that we are not just man, we are part of a whole, this whole could be as big as society or as small as a partnership but what’s really powerful is that it makes you realize the true value of people. People are not only important on your way to success or personal development, they’re not just a mean to and end, they make the price worthy and people are the most valuable asset a man could ever have.
